A. J. Howard’s Dark Particles has made me a true fan of fantasy, and if I were a publisher, this book would be on sale in book stores right now! Though the book is aimed at middle grade audiences, it is a book that will be enjoyed by adults as well.
The main conflict is between the
evil Dark Particles who are trying to take over the Universe of Gideon (of which
Earth is a small part) and two teenagers, Jamie Travelstead and Griff Starmaker,
who fight with their magical birth powers to prevent this take over from
happening.
The action is very fast paced, but each event has remarkable detail and
moves the plot forward. A. J. Howard has the gift of stimulating our imagination
and keeping us guessing about events and relationship connections right up to
the end. Nothing is stale or
predictable. The imagery is superb.
Readers will love to see how the friendship develops between Jamie and
Griff. I found myself drawn to them and relating to them as if they were real
people. A. J. Howard skillfully weaves in other fascinating characters,
relationships, and subplots as the story evolves. There is the evil, ghostly
Jettie, Jamie’s twin, who wants the Dark Particles to suck out Jamie’s soul so
she can take over Jamie’s body and power. Other interesting characters are Mrs.
Glosomore, Judd, Travis Simon’s ghost, and others.
This is a “must have” book for every reader and belongs on your
bookshelf right along with Harry Potter!
